Types of Dental Implants

Since dental implants have become the treatment of choice in so many cases when a tooth needs to be replaced in the most conservative possible way, the popularity of this modality of treatment has grown exponentially worldwide. There are hundreds of designs or types, but for practical purposes we will cite two categories, regular size and mini dental implants. After we have carefully examined all the data from the oral examination, models and cone bean ct scan we can give you your treatment options in which we may use regular or mini dental implants.

Comparison and use of popular types of dental implants

1- Regular size and wide body Implants: They usually have a diameter ranging from 3mm to 7mm, and also they come in different lengths. The primary use is to replace single or multiple missing teeth, additionally some common restorations to replace missing teeth are:

The Implant placement procedure

I can say from my experience in implant placement that is a fairly simple and comfortable procedure for most patients. New technology and instruments and the use of digital imaging like cone bean ct scans have allowed us clinicians to place and restore implants in a very predictable way, thus achieving very good results when replacing missing teeth.

My preference is to place the dental implant immediately after the extraction of the failing tooth, thus minimizing the surgical procedure and the time of osseointegration to a maximum of four months. However In cases where the tooth was lost months or years ago, and the bone has healed it is also four months the wait time. In other words the time to completely replace the missing tooth permanently in either case is similar.

Probably you have heard of “teeth in one day” but what it actually means is that in ideal situations you could get a temporary restoration ( tooth, bridge or denture), and then in four months you would get the permanent tooth, bridge, hybrid bridge or denture.

The big question

I learned that the main concern for most people is “will I be in pain after the implant placement?”, from clinical experience, even though everyone is different and tolerates pain differently and is difficult to generalized observations, I can say that the majority of patients don’t report pain after the procedure and in some cases is a mild or tolerable discomfort usually manageable with over the counter pain aids like regular ibuprophen or advil.
